People have a wide variety of different skin types. As we age, our skin type may change dramatically. It is important to know what skin type we have in order to choose the best products to keep it in the healthiest condition.

Normal Skin

A normal skin type is usually considered to be healthy skin. This type of skin does not produce more skin oils than needed and does not have dry patches. The complexion is balanced and acne breakouts are much less frequent. Unfortunately, this may also be the rarest skin type due to damage that is caused by the environment and people not eating skin healthy foods.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is a common skin type that is recognized by a shiny appearance. When skin produces excessive amounts of oils, it can sometimes lead to acne breakouts. This type of skin may begin to develop during the adolescent years when hormones change as one is entering puberty. There are a number of different types of skin cleansers and astringents on the market that help absorb excess oils and lessen the chance of breakouts.

Dry Skin

Dry skin occurs when it produces less sebaceous skin oils than necessary to remain healthy. This skin is recognized by having patchy rough areas or even peeling skin in some places. If one has dry skin, it is best not to use products that will cause additional dryness. Using cleansers, makeup and lotion that is labeled for dry skin is the best option. Those who have excessively dry skin are also advised not to spend extended amounts of time in the sun because this may cause further damage.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is considered to be one of the most common types of skin problems. Those who have combination skin suffer from excessive oil in some regions of the skin and extreme dryness in others. This type of skin is also prone to frequent acne breakouts. This can make choosing the right skin products more difficult. There are products available for combination skin that will help moisturize dry areas while also absorbing oil in oily regions.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin may also be very problematic for some people. This skin type can become red, itchy and irritated by ingredients in certain products that normally would not bother the average person. Dyes, perfumes, and additives in certain makeup can cause serious breakouts or rashes in sensitive skin. Overexposure to the sun can also cause extreme damage to sensitive skin. Those who have fair skin and freckles tend to be more prone to having sensitive skin. It is very important for those with sensitive skin to use a high spf sunscreen when going outside. It may also take a bit of trial and error for one who has sensitive skin to find the perfect line of skin care products that will not cause irritation.

Aging Skin

Another skin type that we will all eventually have is aging skin. Regardless of what skin type one has during their younger years, the skin changes with age and will most likely need a completely different skin care regime. During this time skin may become drier and may suddenly be more sensitive to harsh cleansers. Skin usually becomes thinner and is more prone to wrinkles. The best products to use for aging skin can vary from person to person.
